(Translated title: Occident)
Avondland (Occident, or literally translated ‘evening land’) portrays a traditional and stereotypical Dutch landscape as rightwing extremists like to see it: a calm landscape with a windmill, a meandering canal, a setting sun…
Extremist views are becoming more and more common and accepted in Dutch politics, a development I’m very worried about. Multiple political parties hold on to ideas that were once seen as extremely controversial by the majority of Dutch voters, but people have now gotten used to (again….).
That’s why I designed an image of what they’d like to see, Avondland. A term also used by fascists in The Netherlands, and occasionally by members of the current Dutch parliament. On the beadwork you’ll find logos of political parties like PVV (seagull) and Forum voor Democratie (Roman temple).
The fringe of the beadwork is crooked, since I believe there is no future for fascism in today’s society.
This work more or less has the same design as the Brown Shirt for the Brownshirts.
