OPEN CALL – ARTISTS WANTED!

For the exhibition at DeLOODS in Breda, we are looking for politically engaged artists who are unable to freely exhibit their art in their country of origin or in the country where they currently live. Political artists without a history of displacement and those from the Netherlands are also welcome to apply for the open call.

Do you know someone – or are you someone – who cannot simply display their work in their own community because it provokes too much resistance, because doing so would have consequences for their safety, or because it is against local law in your home country?* Think of works about their political beliefs, their gender, sexual preferences or human rights. If so, please sign up for this open call.

There is an option to display the art anonymously, to ensure the safety of participating artists.

To make the international shipping of artworks easier and more secure in terms of privacy, some of the works will be displayed digitally using multiple projectors and screens.

During the opening, we will also be working on a community art project together with members of the Breda branch of the Dolle Mina’s. On this evening, we will be creating a large tapestry on which everyone can leave a positive message for the world. Anyone can take part in this project, including non-artists.

The artists’ collective DeLOODS is based in the hall of De Loods, a studio complex housed in a former paper-processing factory on Scheldestraat in Breda. Through its activities, DeLOODS operates at the intersection of research and presentation. In the art space, the process of creating exhibitions is explored in an experimental manner in collaboration with artists. DeLOODS is not a traditional exhibition space or white cube, but a place where ideas are developed through the practice of art.

The exhibition space is situated next to the entrance doors of all the studios in the studio complex. This fosters direct interaction between artists and visitors and creates a unique dynamic in which exhibiting artists work alongside their colleagues. The community at De Loods studio complex offers artists an engaged and knowledgeable audience from the very start of a project, as well as support, feedback and encouragement.

The question “What can a presentation be in this day and age?” lies at the heart of everything DeLOODS does. A circular approach to art and presentation forms the basis for this. Art does not develop in a linear fashion, but through movement, where past and present meet and new ideas can emerge. DeLOODS encourages artists to organise themselves and thus work together to foster a vibrant arts scene in Breda.

APPLICATION

Would you like to apply? Please submit the following information by 20 April.

•    One or more images of the work you wish to exhibit
•    Background information about the work (title, materials, year, and subject matter)
•    Background information/brief biography about yourself, if possible/desired. Please do not forget to mention if you wish to present your work anonymously. Even for an anonymous presentation, we would still like to know who you are and what your work represents, so that we can make a sound and appropriate selection.
•    If available: a link to your social media page or website.

Good to know:

•    You will be notified on 25 April whether you have been selected.
•    The exhibition runs from 31 May to 21 June. We don’t have a title yet for the show.
•    Remuneration for the open call is subject to negotiation; we don’t have a huge budget, but we’ll see what’s feasible, including for artists based abroad.
•    DeLOODS does not take any commission in works that are sold during the exhibition. All profits will go to you.

Voor de tentoonstelling bij DeLOODS in Breda, zijn we op zoek naar naar politiek geëngageerde kunstenaars die in hun land van herkomst of waar ze op dat moment wonen hun kunst niet vrijuit kunnen tonen. Ook politieke kunstenaars zonder vluchtverleden en die afkomstig zijn uit Nederland zijn welkom zich in te schrijven voor de open call.

Ken jij of ben jij iemand die zijn/haar/hun werk niet zomaar kan laten zien in je eigen omgeving, omdat dat te veel weerstand oproept, omdat dat niet zonder consequenties voor je veiligheid kan of omdat dat tegen de lokale wet is in je thuisland?* Denk aan werken over onderwerpen als politieke voorkeuren, geaardheid, gender of mensenrechten. Schrijf je dan in voor deze open call.

Er is een mogelijkheid om de kunst anoniem te tonen, om de veiligheid van deelnemende kunstenaars te garanderen.

Om het internationaal versturen van werken gemakkelijker en veiliger te maken qua privacy, zullen een deel van de werken digitaal getoond worden middels meerdere beamers en schermen.

Tijdens de opening zal er ook samen met leden van de Bredase tak van de Dolle Mina’s gewerkt worden aan een community art project. Tijdens deze avond wordt er gewerkt aan een groots wandkleed waarop iedereen een positieve boodschap voor de wereld kan achterlaten. Iedereen kan deelnemen aan dit project, ook niet-kunstenaars.

Kunstenaarsinitiatief DeLOODS is gevestigd in de hal van De Loods, een ateliercomplex in een voormalige papierverwerkingsfabriek aan de Scheldestraat in Breda. DeLOODS begeeft zich met haar activiteiten op het grensvlak tussen onderzoek en presentatie. In de kunstruimte wordt het maken van tentoonstellingen op experimentele wijze onderzocht in samenwerking met kunstenaars. DeLOODS is geen traditionele presentatieplek of white cube, maar een plek waar vanuit de praktijk van het kunstenaarschap wordt gedacht.

De expositieruimte grenst aan de toegangsdeuren van alle ateliers in het atelierpand. Daardoor ontstaat een directe uitwisseling tussen kunstenaars en bezoekers, en een bijzondere dynamiek waarbij exposerende kunstenaars werken te midden van hun collega’s. De community van atelierpand De Loods biedt kunstenaars vanaf het begin van een project een betrokken en deskundig publiek, evenals ondersteuning, feedback en aanmoediging.

De vraag “Wat kan een presentatie zijn in deze tijd?” staat centraal in alles wat DeLOODS doet. Een circulaire manier van denken over kunst en presentatie vormt daarbij het uitgangspunt. Kunst ontwikkelt zich niet lineair maar in beweging, waar verleden en heden elkaar ontmoeten en nieuwe ideeën kunnen ontstaan. DeLOODS stimuleert kunstenaars om zelf te organiseren en zo gezamenlijk te werken aan een sterk kunstklimaat in Breda.

• Een of meerdere afbeeldingen van het werk wat je wil laten zien
• Achtergrondinformatie over het werk (titel, materiaal, jaar, maar ook het onderwerp waar het werk over gaat)
• Achtergrondinformatie/beknopte bio over jezelf, indien mogelijk/gewenst. Vergeet het alsjeblieft niet te vermelden als je je werk anoniem wil presenteren. Voor een anonieme presentatie, willen we alsnog wel weten wie je bent en waar je werk voor staat, om zo een goede en passende selectie te kunnen maken.
• Indien aanwezig: een link naar je social media pagina of website.

Goed om te weten:

• Op 25 april hoor je of je bij de selectie zit.
• De tentoonstelling loopt van 31 mei tot en met 21 juni. We hebben nog geen titel voor de tentoonstelling.
• De vergoeding voor de open call is in overleg, we hebben geen enorm budget maar we kijken wat haalbaar is, ook voor kunstenaars in het buitenland.
• DeLOODS vraagt geen commissie bij verkopen van werken tijdens de expositie, alle opbrengsten gaan naar jou.
• Er zijn geen kosten verbonden aan meedoen met deze open call.
