Pietà

This tapestry is about the story of Adam and Eve and Original Sin in relation to contemporary society, especially what effect the Bible story still has in our Western society today. In Paradise, the devil disguised as a snake tempted Eve to take a bite of the forbidden apple, then Eve tempted Adam, resulting in both being banished from Paradise.

These sentences can be heard very often when addressing inappropriate behaviour. It was just a joke, he didn’t mean it like that! Bet you asked for it, it’s just the way he is……. And so on, and so on. Every time a new sentence pops up in the media, or when I encounter one myself, I might include it in the next tapestry…

Stel je niet zo aan

This work is part of a series where I am going to integrate common replies in Dutch on sexist or other inappropriate behaviour into kitsch tapestries, with an embroidery-style rose in the middle. I started working on these tapestries during the large #metoo scandal on The Voice of Holland.

Je zal er zelf wel om gevraagd hebben

The artwork "Je zal er zelf wel om gevraagd hebben" is part of a series that captures common responses to sexism and inappropriate behavior in Dutch culture. With an embroidered rose on a kitsch tapestry, the piece highlights how such dismissive comments reflect deeper societal issues. This artwork is currently part of the Museum W collection in Weert.

Je mag ook niks meer zeggen

The artwork "Je mag ook niks meer zeggen" addresses the frustration often expressed when people feel restricted in their comments due to societal shifts in addressing inappropriate behavior. Part of a series inspired by the #MeToo scandal, this piece integrates these defensive remarks into kitsch tapestries, blending them with traditional embroidery-style roses.

Let’s get political

Men on Pedestals

Men on Pedestals are a series of two black and grey velvet tapestries. On each tapestry, a man stands on a so called scully box, a small platform, so they appear taller. In this case, they want to appear taller than their female co-star.

Teatr-e Shahr Metro Station
