Pietà

This tapestry is about the story of Adam and Eve and Original Sin in relation to contemporary society, especially what effect the Bible story still has in our Western society today. In Paradise, the devil disguised as a snake tempted Eve to take a bite of the forbidden apple, then Eve tempted Adam, resulting in both being banished from Paradise.

Je zal er zelf wel om gevraagd hebben, de kalender!

Na een succesvolle crowdfunding is ‘ie dan ein-de-lijk hier: de verjaardagskalender met al mijn 12 kralenwerken met daarop botte, lompe, seksistische uitspraken. Het was maar een grapje, niet zo boos kijken, hij bedoelde het vast niet zo…. Kortom, je mag ook niks meer zeggen!

These sentences can be heard very often when addressing inappropriate behaviour. It was just a joke, he didn’t mean it like that! Bet you asked for it, it’s just the way he is……. And so on, and so on. Every time a new sentence pops up in the media, or when I encounter one myself, I might include it in the next tapestry…

Stel je niet zo aan

This work is part of a series where I am going to integrate common replies in Dutch on sexist or other inappropriate behaviour into kitsch tapestries, with an embroidery-style rose in the middle. I started working on these tapestries during the large #metoo scandal on The Voice of Holland.

Je mag niet eens meer flirten

Part of a series addressing sexism, this artwork showcases common Dutch responses like "You're not even allowed to flirt anymore" integrated into kitsch-style tapestries. Inspired by the #MeToo scandal on The Voice of Holland, the series humorously critiques everyday sexist comments.
