NAAR BOVEN

There is Absolutely No Cause for Alarm @ De Punt, Amsterdam

There is Absolutely No Cause for Alarm is a visual collection of thoughts on the suppression of human freedoms expressed by emerging international artists Jan Adriaans, Ella de Burca, Aljaž Celarc, Ehsan Ul Haq, Phelim Hoey, Marge Monko, Joyce Overheul, Irina Popova, Dorian de Rijk, and Victoria Ushkanova. The exhibition offers a basis for further reflection on the subject of slavery, and the forms it took in the twentieth century and in modern day life.

“This is the historical reality of the soul, which, unlike the soul represented by Christian theology, is not born in sin and subject to punishment, but is born rather out of methods of punishment, supervision, and constraint.” wrote Foucault in Discipline and Punish: The birth of the Prison.

Within the current show artists are questioning these methods and the ways they have formally altered during the last hundred years starting from Roger Casement’s discoveries on human right abuses in Peru in 1911, and ending in our time when, to paraphrase Yanis Varoufakis, banks have the same threatful potential as tanks.

Venue: The exhibition will inhabit two spaces: De Punt and the neighboring newly opened Studio Kepler Amsterdam (Frans de Wollantstraat 82 and 84, Amsterdam)
