Femicide is a serious issue in the Netherlands. Every eight days, a woman is killed because she is a woman. Femicide is often perpetrated by a (former) partner or family member, but motives also include misogyny or power.
The installation “Home Sweet Home” immerses viewers in a domestic setting marked by tragedy. A grey kitchen knife, placed on doilies or placemats in the colours of bloodstains, evokes a chilling sense of familiarity, horror, and loss. Women are often murdered in their own homes by a man they know, with a kitchen knife as the weapon of choice. The doilies and crochet work reinforce the seeming safety of domestic life, while their colours and the glistening, embroidered placemats capture the emotional gravity of violence occurring in these intimate spaces. The hand-crocheted knife and doilies—crafted with more than 46 kilometres of yarn—serve as tactile reminders of vulnerability and grief, leaving a lasting emotional impact on those who witness the piece.
