I’m very very very happy to announce my work will be on show at Centraal Museum, Utrecht during the solo (!) exhibition Live, Laugh Leidmotief.
The exhibition opens for the public on the 31st of August. One interesting feature is that because of the glass walls of the exhibition space, my works can also be viewed from behind. Be there or be square!

Joyce Overheul (1989, ‘s-Hertogenbosch) maakt kunstwerken van textiel, vaak op basis van fotografie. Ze stikt, borduurt, rijgt en knoopt: ambachtelijke technieken die lang zijn weggezet als vrouwenhobby’s. In haar werken verweeft ze politiek beladen onderwerpen zoals emancipatie, feminisme, vluchtelingen en de wapenhandel. Zo ontstaat een scherp contrast tussen de harde inhoud en het zachte materiaal. Die combinatie vormt het leidmotief (de leidende gedachte) voor het werk van Joyce Overheul. Met humor, naald, draad en kralen gaat ze pijnlijke maatschappelijke kwesties te lijf.
In Utrecht Lokaal is een overzicht van haar recente werk te zien. Door de transparante architectuur in deze ruimte is het mogelijk ook de achterkant van de werken te zien. De zichtbare sporen van het handwerken herinneren ons aan de vele uren die in het maken zitten.
Joyce Overheul studeerde Fine Art aan de HKU in Utrecht, gevolgd door een master Artistic Research aan de maHKU.

Joyce Overheul (1989, Den Bosch) makes artworks from textiles, often based on photography. She uses embroidery, crochet and beadwork, craft techniques that have long been dismissed as women’s hobbies. In her works, she interweaves politically charged subject matter, such as women’s rights, the refugee crisis and the arms trade, creating a strong contrast between the hard content and the soft materials. This combination forms the leitmotif (the recurring theme) for her work. She tackles painful social issues with a needle, thread and beads and a dash of humour.
Utrecht Local presents an overview of her recent work. The transparent architecture in this space allows us to see the back of the works, revealing how many hours have gone into making them.
Overheul received both her BA and MA in fine art at the HKU in Utrecht.
